Stictochironomus

Large sized larvae about 10mm, orange 〜 red in color. The larvae of this genus inhabit in the comparatively cool and clear water. There are about 10 species in Japan.

4 medina teeth, inner two (central teeth) smaller than outer. Lateral teeth 6 pairs,
1st lateral tooth smaller than 2nd... Ventromental plate broad , radial line thin.
Lateral teeth (inner teeth) of mandible 3, seta subdentalis long, slightly curved. Antenna 6 segments, Lauterborn's organ alternate on segment 2nd. and 3rd..
STand SUplumose on both sides. Pecten epipharyngis consisting of 3〜6 separate.
Some of Stictochironomus have blackish brown area on ventral side of head,(fig.2)

Microtendipes rydalensia type 3 median teeth the same sizes, pale yellow weakly plumose on both sides long plumose 3〜several teeth
Microtendipes pedellus type central 1 of 3 median teeth very small.

Paratendipes 4 median teeth the same sizes, pale yellow weakly plumose on both sides long plumose simple,3 broad teeth

Microtendipes

Microtendipes is a comparatively large sized larva of 6〜8mm length. body color is dark red, head is fawn. 2 pairs of eye spots are slightly away.

There are two types in median teeth of mentum, one is 3 teeth iof the same size, and the other is the middle of three extremely small. Lateral teeth 6 pairs. Ventromental plates broad, edge of them weakly serrated.

STcoarsely or weakly plumose on both sides.
Pecten epipharyngis simple 3 broad teeth of equal length (rydalensia type) or 3〜several teeth (pedellus type).

Paratendipes

Paratendipes is a comparatively large sized larva of 7〜10mm length. body color is dark red, head is light brown. 2 pairs of eye spots away distantly.
Several species inhabit in Japan.

4 median teeth pale yellow., 2 central teeth slightly small. Lateral teeth 6 pairs, brown, 1st. lateral tooth fused with 2nd. very small;, 2nd. lateral tooth largest.
Ventromental plates medially separated by 1/2 breath of mentum.
Antenna with 6 segments, antenna ratio almost 1.2〜1.4.
, Lauterborn organ aiternate on segment 2nd. and 3rd..
・STplumose nomally, S Uplimose moderately long.
・Labral lamell normal.
・Pecten epipharyngis consisting of 3 simple,triangle.
・Sata subdentalis long, sharp.
・Anal setae 8.
